It was indeed a great time out, on Tuesday afternoon, December 20th at Habitat Cinema and Restaurant, Agbor as African Foundation for Mental Health Advocacy (AFMHA) organized an indoor celebration hangout for Dr Munu O. J. to celebrate the qualifications and elevation of Dr. Munu as a Consultant Psychiatrist.
Dr. Munu is the Head of the Department of Mental Health at Central Hospital, Agbor, Delta State. By this elevation, he is the only Consultant Psychiatrist in Delta State Hospital Management Board.
Since 2017, Dr. Munu has been in partnership with AFMHA to provide great medical care for patients within Ika Federal Constituency where AFMHA Office is headquartered. The theme of the celebration hang out was, “Mental Health Wisdom”.
AFMHA on 11th December 2022 marked seven years of incorporation in Nigeria as a mental health foundation. To this end, AFMHA is giving ten mentally challenged Nigerians comprehensive medical care, rehabilitation and reintegration as well as economic empowerment. The ten patients are spread across the six geo-political zone of Nigeria. We are pleased to inform you that the first beneficiary of this gesture is a patient within Ika Federal Constituency that have started receiving medical care over three weeks under Dr. Munu’s management as the consultant psychiatrist.
Dr. Munu, beaming with smiles educated the guests on Mental Health generally and emphasized the need to refrain from substance and alcohol abuse that they can affect their mental health negatively such as marijuana, heroin, cocaine, e.t.c.
He advised everyone to ensure that the brain is always protected because once it is affected it can result to mental illness. He encouraged the public to seek for solutions to their Mental Health challenges through mental health experts who can give this help either by medication, psychotherapy (talk therapy) and counseling.
Ika Mental Health Ambassador for secondary schools in year 2021, Miss Vivian Ogor formerly Staff Model Secondary School, University of Delta, Agbor who was first in both speech and essay competition in last year World Mental Health Day event who spoke at the hangout, called for complete protection of the brain through the avoidance of hard substances. She urged every Nigerian, particularly youths to maintain a good mental health for it is a sure way to a healthy living.
Also Year, 2022 Mental Health Ambassador, Agbor Jennifer, a student of Owa Model Secondary School who was the best in this Years’ World Mental Health Day Competition spoke on the need for everyone to prioritize their mental health.
In his remark, the Secretary Board of Trustees, AFMHA, Mr. Victor Daniel while showering encomiums on Dr. Munu, expressed gratitude to him for his selfless service to humanity. He wished him more glorious years ahead in his career as a consultant psychiatrist.
High points of the hangout were cutting of cake, taking of group photographs and answering of questions on mental health. It was highly an interactive session with both physical and virtual audience.
AFMHA is already giving consideration to the public demands to make this hangout a monthly affair as a means of enlightenment and advocacy on mental health.
