Aliagwai Community has won the 9th edition of the Ihu-Iyase Communities Football Competition sponsored by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky E. O. Irabor. Aliagwai Community defeated Alihame Community by one goal in the final match that was played on Thursday, December 29 at Agwu-Ewuru Secondary School, Ewuru, Agbor. The goal was scored in the first half of the keenly contested match. The second half of the match produced no goal as players of both communities battle till the end of ninety minutes. The match attracted large crowd of spectators, including General Irabor and his wife, senior army officers, politcal office holders and community leaders.
The semi-final match that was played earlier that day was won by Ewuru Community after humiliating Alihagwu Community with two goals. The cup winners as well as the first and second runners up received cash prices from General Irabor. Medals and cups were presented to the winners, including the match officials.
In his remark, General Irabor congratulated all participants of the football competition for the huge success, urging them to keep promoting unity among Ihu-Iyase Communities, Ika Land and Delta State in general.
He expressed joy that the competition has succeeded in fostering Unity among communities in the area. He promised to assist in the area of getting the best players engaged at the national or international levels. He appreciated all persons who joined efforts to make the 2022 competition a huge success.
High points of the day were the official presentations of the cups and medals to the winners and taking of group photographs with General Irabor.
