Arts and Culture
An art is the expression of creativity or imagination.
It refers to all activities related to the beauty and design as well as innovative creation geared towards entertaining and educating the society.
It may be taken in diverse forms like;
Prose writing.
Poetry writing.
Dance.
Drama.
Architecture/Drawing. etc.
Culture is the way of life of people; it embraces the people’s language, mode of dressing, way of worship, types of food. It depicts the way people live in a society.
Let’s take Nigeria as a case study, Arts and culture are interwoven and conjoined like Siamese twins that are inseparable.
Culture is reflected in our history, heritage and our way of life.
Our culture reflects who we are; it represents the essence of our existence, our vitality and the health of our society.
While our arts which in Africa are rarely used for decoration purposes, but rather to give life to our values, emotion and daily customs.
For example, the bronze mask of the Benin kingdom shows the creative side of the people and also used to glorify the Oba – their divine god and the history of his imperial power or to honour the queen mother.
In conclusion, we should all know that our culture is very rich, and our arts strengthen our cultural heritage. Thus, let it be the source of our strength, unity and peace as we have no other, our own is our own.
