The authorities of the Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State, has allocated an office to the Nigerian Correctional Service, formerly known as the Nigeria Prisons Service within the council area.
At the brief event which took place on Monday, January 18, 2021, the Head of Personnel Management who is presently the Acting Chairman of Ika North East local government area, Sir Friday. C. Obianke, in company of some top government functionaries of the council formally handed over the keys of the office to the officers of the Non-Custodial Unit, which is under the umbrella of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
Earlier in a brief remark, Sir F. C. Obianke, disclosed that the allocation of an office to the Nigerian Correctional Center in Owa-Oyibu, was in line with the federal government directives that all federal establishments should have an office at every local government council in the country. He noted that it was a good development and a step in the right direction for the Nigerian Correctional Center to have their office in the local government headquarters, which according to him is an indication that the presence of the federal government would be felt in the area. He charged the officers to manage the office space provided for them because presently the council is lacking accommodation in many areas.
On his part, Deputy Superintendent of Corrections (Non-Custodial), Egun Tuesday, who received the office keys on behalf of the management of the Nigerian Correctional Service, who was full of smiles expressed his satisfaction over the development, saying that it’s been long that they have been looking for an office space within the council, he appreciated the Acting Chairman and the leadership of the local government for the wonderful feat. Continuing, he assured the council management that the purpose of giving them the office will be greatly achieved, assuring that the place will be judiciously used.
DSC Egun, further stated that the Non-Coustodial Unit of the Nigerian Correctional Service, handle issues of convicted offenders whose cases and jail terms are minor, explaining that the essence of the Unit is that it will help to decongest the prisons, disclosing that the Non-Custodial will have what they call Paro, Restorative Justice System, Community Service, etc, saying that in the area of Community Service it will help and benefit the community, explaining that rather than serve their jail terms in the corrections custody, they will give them lesser punishment and bring them to the Non-Custodial Center which is the office.
Speaking further, he appreciated Mr. Ogwu Samuel, the Chaplain in of the Ecclesiastical matter in Agbor Correctional Service for his efforts in helping them to look for an office and also appreciated the management and staffs of Ika Mirror and Ika Weekly Newspapers respectively for their support in reporting about their services to the general public.
DSC Egun Tuesday, used the opportunity to appeal to spirited individuals and Non Governmental Organizations to come to their aid in the provision of office furniture and equipment for effective service delivery.
In the same vein, Chaplain Ogwu Samuel, commended the Head of Personnel Management who also doubles as the current Acting Chairman of the council, saying, “Though we started this move when my friend Hon. Barr. Victor Ebonka was on board, at the end we had our way through when he recently handed over to the Head of Personnel Management.
We want to appreciate them so very much for the way and manner they conducted themselves in this brief ceremony of handing over the office keys to us. I want to assure them that we will forward the clip of today’s event to the Delta State Commissioner of Police in order for him to see the colourful ceremony. We also want to appreciate Ika Weekly and Ika Mirror Newspapers that gave us a firm promise that they will be covering every activities of the Non-Custodial Unit.
