A pressure group known as Concerned Citizens for Good Governance has come forth to support the councilorship ambition of Mr. Donald Okonta in Ward 8, Ika South LG Area. This development is an offshoot of a publication in last week’s edition of Ika Mirror, where Mr. Okonta was advised to steer clear of the councilorship seat of the ward.
Their communiqué read thus: We read with disappointment the publication in ika mirror about Okonta Donald not being from Agbor; that he is from abavo and therefore should steer clear of the forthcoming PDP councilorship contest in Ward 8. We state categorically that most of us grew up in Agbor with Okonta Donald as we are childhood and neighborhood friends and we know him from birth.
His father, Chief Dibieamaka Okonta (since residing at No 9b Okonta Close, Ward 8, Agbor) is from Okpe, Abavo, ika south local government area of delta state while his mother, Late Mrs Felicia Agatha Morka (born to the family of Late Mr. John Diji Morka who lived all his life at No 51 Mariere St Ward 8, Agbor) is from Agbor-Alidinma, ika south local government area of delta state. His paternal mother (Late Okpohokaibe) is from Agbornta and Oki both in Ika South LGA of Delta State.
Some of us still went to the same primary and secondary school with him here in Agbor. He had lived all his life here in Agbor. He has businesses in Agbor and presently is the owner and CEO of FELICIA AGATHA CIVIC CENTRE also in Agbor aside his many other business concerns.
Although a young man, he has accomplished a lot in life in Agbor. He is a philanthropist and had serially helped to cushion the effects of aging and erosions on our Agbor roads. He had rehabilitated Isede by Ofume Street, Mariere by Ojeifoh Street, Iduwe by Ojeifoh street etc and recently graded and opened up Okwuokenye street all in Agbor.
Moreover, as the Chairman of Idumuenyi Landlord Association, Agbor he had selflessly assisted the community to upgrade and sandfill several of their roads, open up some other roads and even went ahead to financially support the construction and energizing of a 300kva community transformer as well as the construction and networking of poles and lines at same Idumuenyi (across express) which the whole residents of that area is connecting electricity from and they are very grateful for it.
Presently our friend and brother is an Alumni of Delta State University (Abraka), Nigeria and proudly is the President of Ika Delsu Alumni (an umbrella body of all Delsu Alumni in Ika). We thereby state that Donald Okonta is highly qualified to contest for the councillorship in Ward 8 Ika south LGA if he so wishes to. We and all other youths, women and men of Ward 8 will wholeheartedly support him all through the processes as we are proud to have a friend, brother and son like him (nwa we ala ni ugbo ke owu).
Furthermore, legally speaking, the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as well as the Electoral Act of 2010 only states that a person must have lived in a place for 10 years to be qualified. Donald Okonta was born and bred in Agbor for over 30 years; he is what we youths fondly refer to as ‘born here grow here’ (we wehe ne de a zun; we di nwan ali kwa ese).
Politically speaking, Okonta Donald has long paid his dues in PDP Ika South and his compensation is long overdue. He is an old card carrying member of PDP Ward 8 Ika South. He is one of the persons who would painstakingly ensure that PDP is delivered and triumphant in the elections. Just at the last 2019 elections, he was a Ward 8 delegate for the 2019 gubernatorial, senatorial, representative and house of assembly elections. During the same 2019 general elections, he was the Campaign Secretary for Ward 8. On the elections D-Day, he worked as a Party Agent at Unit 8 in Ward 8 and was also one of the coordinating Agents for the whole of Ward 8. It is worthy of note that Ward 8 Ika South got the highest votes during his tenure as Campaign Secretary. He is a community youth leader and has helped to restore the peace that presently exists in ward 8 and beyond.
Donald Okonta is the last man standing to be compensated by the PDP as all other vibrant youths that contested the 2018 councillorship alongside him has been given appointments except him.
Nobody should try to instigate unrest in Ward 8, we are peace loving and law-abiding youths though we will not hesitate to claim our rights. People should desist from tarnishing the images of others; elections are won in the polls and not on the pages of newspapers or through campaign of calumny.
Lastly, we want to warn that nobody can incite youths against Donald Okonta as majority of the youths are with him, having benefitted from his friendship and brotherhood. We will resist with crushing and irreparable force any such individual. Don’t let some miscreants use you.
