A revered community leader and Chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Ika South Local Government Area, Delta State, Dr. Chukwuma O. Nwaonicha, has urged government at all levels to work towards the safety of students in the country before official opening of schools. Nwaonicha who spoke in an interview at Agbor said that the advice should be taken seriously by government as the index cases of Corona Virus pandemic is increasing on daily basis.
He pointed out that safety is guaranteed if precautionary measures are applied, hence, government should ensure that schools are fumigated and students protected from being infected by the dreaded Corona virus disease.
According to the American trained Organic Chemist, “The safety of our children is paramount. As the Covid-19 index cases continued unabated and without any certified drug for it, it’s imperative that government at all levels in Nigeria should take the safety of our school children seriously. I appreciate the efforts of government so far, but, more should be done. Nigerian schools should be fumigated and guidelines on good precautionary measures should be stated before the official opening of schools.
Corona Virus as we all know is a deadly disease and we cannot afford to lose any loved one. Prevention is far better than cure. It will be too dangerous to open schools without setting in place preventive measures. Our children are our pride and future leaders of our country. Therefore, we owe our children safety and good parental guidance. This is a clarion to the federal, state and local governments. Before any step is taken to get our schools opened preventive measures should be applied. Health is wealth.”
It could be recalled that Covid-19 pandemic which started in December last year has claimed thousands of lives, particularly in Europe and United States of America. The disease which took the world by surprise is still to get a curable and recognized vaccine. Social distancing, washing of hands, the use of sanitizers and face masks are parts of the preventive measures taken so far by government before a curable vaccine is found. As noted, most of our public and private schools are over populated making social distancing impossible. In addition, many private schools have no space including play ground. These are challenges to be addressed by government at all levels in the nation before the opening of schools.
