Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State on Thursday, November 5, 2020 commissioned the fairly modern Edike Market along Edike Street, Agbor, Delta State.
The august occasion had in attendance some notable personalities amongst whom were; the Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Delta State, Hon. Ossai Chika, Special Adviser to the Governor on Local Government Affairs, Hon. Kelly. P, Ika South Council Chairman, Hon. Barr. Victor Okoh, Executive Assistant to the Governor on political matters, Capt. Peter Idion, Dein of Agbor Kingdom Representatives, PG of Agbor Kingdom, Mr. Larry Onyeche, Rotn. Dr. E. U Tibi, Hon. Collins Bello, Members of Ika South Legislative Arm, Market men and women and host of others.
The commissioning of the market was performed by the commissioner for Trade and Investment, Delta State, Hon. Ossai Chika.
In his speech, Hon. Ossai Chika congratulated the Ika South Council Chairman and good people of the Local Government for coming up with such developmental idea. He noted that this will boost the local government’s income and enhance growth in the area.
He warned the market women and men not to trade along the road in the market, as anyone caught doing that will be punished severely.
Also speaking, the Ika South Council Chairman, Hon. Barr. Victor Okoh welcomed everyone to the historic and memorable occasion.
In his words, ” it is historic, because we are here to witness the commissioning of a fairly Modern Market, the first of its kind in the community built in collaboration with the shop owners under a Build Operate and Transfer arrangement. It is important to emphasize here that the council did not put a dime in achieving what we are seeing today. The idea of this market came about as a result of the COVID19 experience in the local government area. Indeed COVID19 has its own positive sides as you can see.
This market consists of 315 lock up shops and 2,000 open shops with 2 slaughter slabs and toilet facilities.
I use this opportunity to passionately appeal to all users of this market to cooperate with one another and maintain a peaceful atmosphere as they go about their respective businesses and diligently abide by the terms and conditions in their acceptance letter allotment.
I wish to use this singular opportunity to express my appreciation to the Governor, His Excellency, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa for all he has been doing for the Local Government and to thank His Royal Majesty, the Dein of Agbor Kingdom for his continual support to my administration and ensuring that the construction of this market is successful”.
He also thanked all market women and men for their cooperation in ensuring that the market became a reality.
Thereafter, the recently completed Abavo Police Station was commissioned, this time by the Special Adviser to the Governor on local government affairs, Hon Kelly P. in company of the Area Commander, Nigeria Police Agbor Area Command, ACP Umeh Udofia.
In his speech, Hon Okoh explained the need for the completion of the long abandoned Police Station, which according to him began in the administration of Hon Fada Ibude to help improve the condition of the Police Division, Abavo and promote effective service delivery by the officers and men of the station.
He also stated that the council embarked on the sinking of a bore hole, erection of a perimeter fence and the provision of accommodation for some officers and men of the station, including the ongoing construction of a mini barracks, which he promised will be ready in no distant time.
He appealed to the police to make judicious use of the facilities and new edifice, stating that to whom much is given, much is expected.
