Good day sir, please could you introduce yourself?
My name is Monye Lucky Ehiwuogwu. I am a businessman based in Abuja. I have a foundation known as, Monye Lucky Ehiwuogwu Foundation registered with Corporate Affairs Commission. The essence of the foundation is to endeagender help and succour for the less privileged, taking particular interest on the widows and orphans. I am very passionate about orphans and widows because they are among the poorest of the poor. I have been carrying out philanthropic activities for quite some time. It was my philanthropic nature that led me to join a society in the Catholic Church, known as St. Vincent De Paul. It is a non-governmental organization, the largest in the Catholic Church. It was founded by a man called St. Vincent De Paul. He founded the organization because he also had compassion for the poor and the downtrodden and that was where I drew my strength from.
However, I also deemed it fit to join Rotary. I am a Rotarian and former president. I felt all these are not enough; hence, I extended my philanthropic activities to my home, Agbor and local government, Ika South so as to affect positively my people knowing fully well that we have among us the poor and downtrodden especially, widows and orphans.

How are you actualizing your vision to always assist in the welfare of the poor and downtrodden in the society?
Every year, on the auspices or platform of my foundation, I always try to reach out as much as my resources can carry me to people who don’t have anybody to look up to except God. Of course, God cannot come down from Heaven to reach out to anyone, but he uses people to do His work. In the book of Matthew, Jesus Christ instructed us to show love to our brothers and sisters. Drawing from that fact as a Christian, I promised myself that I will follow the teachings of Christ by reaching out to the less privileged and downtrodden in the society.

During the yuletide season I reached out to the poor and downtrodden across Ika South Local Government through my Foundation ( Money Lucky Ehiwuogwu Foundation) as a platform so that the poor and downtrodden can also enjoy Christmas. I distributed customized rice of over 500 bags of ten kg each. I shared over 400 pieces of wrappers across all the twelve wards in Ika South. In addition, I have the intention to distribute free notebooks to the children of the less privileged in our society as soon as school resumes this January. I strongly believe that”if one reaches one” our society will be a better place. I believe in the empowerment of people. And in every position I found myself I must always empower people.

Furthermore, my company, Monaco Ventures Nigeria LTD has empowered a lot of people outside my non-governmental organization. A lot of Ika people are working in my establishment. My people should benefit from my business and philanthropic activities.

Are you going to sustain your philanthropic activities?
First of all, I would love you to ask me how and why did I come into politics. I came into politics not because of rice and stew. I did not come into politics because of what I will gain from it. There is nothing that politics will give me materially that I don’t have today. I did not go into politics for material gains. I am not happy because our people have not gotten enough dividends of democracy. That was why I said to myself, I cannot fold my hands and continue to complain that things are not done right, hence, I have come to the ring to be part of the change that I yearn for. I will sustain every effort I am making today to alleviate the sufferings of our people.

How did you come about the name “Ukpe”?
Today, our people call me “Ukpe” (Light). How did that name come about? God gave me gift of dreams. There is no major thing that will happen today that I will not dream about it. In 2017, I was in my dream where I was elevated to see the whole of Ika South Local Government in alter darkness. As I was pondering what the dream portend for our land, I saw light came into the town. At the time I came into politics I said my name is “Ukpe”(Light). That was how the name “Ukpe” came about. We will sustain the tempo. I believe our good people of Ika South have started having a rethink and see reasons to give their supports to people who have the capacity to attract development to their doorsteps.

What is your message to your people?
2020 was a tough and turbulent year but, to the glory of Almighty God we were able to surmount them. First, I want to congratulate our good people of Ika South for the perseverance that God has given to us and we also thank Him for our lives because when Covid-19 started, we thought it was going to wipe out the human race but, God gave us grace to overcome. So, I wish our dear people of Ika South a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year as we sojourn into 2021. I strongly believe that 2021 will be a better year. If we were able to surmount 2020, there is no challenge this year that we will not be able to surmount.
