The Ika Landlords and Landladies Association has warned residents against extortion.
Fraud to issue them prepaid meters through the Licensed Electrical Contractors Association of Nigeria (LECAN).
The group gave the warning during a meeting held on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at their secretariat at Anioma Hospital Boji-Boji, Owa with some stakeholder’s in attendance.
Other bodies present include: Special Assistant to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa on Political Matters, Hon. Uwaoma Ogboi, Coordinator for Defense of Human Right, Engr; Charles Okwuokenye, Chairmen, National Youth Council of Nigeria, Ika North East and South respectively, Comrade Beye Kingsley and Comrade Christian Izegede.
Speaking, the Chairman, Ika Landlords and Landladies Association, Mr. Vincent Arimokwu said they are not going to relent in their quest for prepaid meters to be issued to all Ika residence.
He revealed that the struggle for prepaid meters has recently given birth to constituting/inauguration of committee on Electricity Supply and Consumers, which members cut across people from the different communities of Ika nation.
According to him, “The committee chaired by Mr. Godwin Idiaghe is mandated to frequently meet with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).

Importantly, BEDC to ensure that all electricity consumers in Ika land are issued with prepaid meters without any pre-condition.

Mr. Arimokwu while thanking the youths for joining them in their meeting to find out the outcome of their struggle for prepaid meters.
enjoined residents to disregard text message from the LECAN office in Agbor informing them that prepaid meters are ready and to come forth for information for claims.
Continuing, he said, “LECAN does not have the power to issue prepaid meters.
It is the sole responsibility of BEDC. whoever falls victim of fraud in the name to procure prepaid meter is at his or her own risk.

Responding, the Chairman, National Youth Council of Nigeria, Ika North East chapter, Comrade Beye Kingsley appreciated the Ika Landlords and Landladies Association for their doggedness in the prepaid meter struggle, while frowning over the new BEDC billing tariff of N10000 per month to households without functioning meters against N5000, which according to him that government is against it but on the ground that BEDC must supply electricity of not less than twelve hours in day.
He promised that as youth bodies that they will continue to join hands with Ika Landlords and Landladies Association in the struggle for prepaid meters for it is a matter for the benefit of everyone.
