As Nigeria clocked 60 years as an independent and sovereign nation on Thursday, October 1, a revered community leader and Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Ika South Local Government Area, Delta State, Dr. Chukwuma Nwaonicha has congratulated Nigerians on the journey so far. Nwaonicha who spoke in an interview with the press at Agbor said that at 60, Nigeria has not done badly despite the challenges it has experienced over the years.
The American trained Organic Chemist noted that the attainment of independence on October 1, 1960 truly ushered in a new era in the history of the country as hopes and expectations were high.
His words, “I congratulate my fellow country men and women as Nigeria clocks 60 years on October 1. At 60, we may not have achieved our targeted goals as a country but, we have to an extent been able to stay together irrespective of our diverse cultures and religious beliefs. We may not have gotten it right at the moment but, we shall get there one day if we continue doing the needful. According to a Chinese proverb, ‘a journey of a thousand miles begins with a step’. Rome was not built in a day. Why I don’t like or support corruption which has been the bane of Nigeria’s development, I’m optimistic that our country will be among comity of developed nation’s one day. Let us keep hope alive.”
He thanked all Nigerians who have in various ways contributed meaningfully to the development of the country, urging them not to relent in their selfless service to the country. While advising Nigerian political leaders to be accountable and always put the interest of the country first before any other consideration, he called on Nigerians to join hands with government at all levels to build a better Nigeria where peace, unity, love and progress will reign.
