In his speech, former District Governor of the Club, Rotn. Dr. Adeyemi Oladokun stated that they came to identify with the inmates.
“Our visit was to encourage you, so that you can put in your best and contribute your quota to the growth and development of our dear nation by the time you leave here. This was also to liberate you from all vices. When you gain your freedom from the government, please don’t engage in any thing that will bring you back to this prison again. Be a blessing to your family and others around you in the society”, he advised.
He therefore thanked the members and leadership of the club, as well as staff of Agbor Correctional Service for their support and prayer for the inmates, praying God to be with them in all they do in life.
Also speaking, the President of the Club, Rotn. Chris Monye averred that the essence of what they are doing this day was to affect lives positively, in terms of identifying their needs and meet them for the overall well being of the people.
In his words, “we have identified an inmate and empowered him. We found out that when they complete their prison terms, they go back to the street and commit crime, because of frustration, due to lack of job. Our visit was to encourage them to become a responsible person in the society, after completing their prison terms. We will make this a continuous process. I enjoin government to key into this and even do better than us, so as to make life easy for the inmates, when they have completed their prison terms “.
Also, the immediate past President of the Club and Current Assistant to the Governor, Zone 13 of Rotary Club, Rotn. Nkechi Odum opined that government should empower those inmates whose prison terms will soon come to an end, so that they will not commit crime, when they get back to the society.
She pointed out, “I initiate this programme to help Ifeanyi Ijeh whose prison terms will come to an end on Saturday 17 of this month, after discovering that he is good at rendering laundry service in the prison. We present laundry equipments and paid one year rent of shop for him. This will help him to go to the society and be useful to himself.
She advised the inmates to make use of the correctional facilities and get used to it, so that when they get out of prison, they will have something doing in the society, adding that they should know that crime does not pay and make them useful.
Similarly, the Project Service of the Club, Rotn. Emeke Utebor maintained that they are there to execute one of the seven areas of focus of the club, called economic development and empowerment of the inmates, declaring that the club takes upon itself to empower the inmate, whose prison terms will come to an end on Saturday 17th of this month.
“The society should try to support the correctional centre to improve what they have in their workshop. We want to appeal to Gov. Okowa and well meaning individuals to assist the inmates in their correctional centre and when they have also acquired a skill, the public should patronize them, while they are still serving their prison terms. This is why we have come to assist our brother, Ifeanyi Ijeh, so that he will be useful to himself and others in the society. In fact, everyone should emulate this and pay it forward”, he concluded.
In his remarks, the Deputy Controller of the Correctional Service, Donatus Ezugwu appreciated the Club for their kind gesture towards the inmates, stating that the inmates will now learn more hand works to become a better citizen, as they are going out to the society, praying God to prosper them in all areas of life.
