Self-employment is the art of generating one’s income directly from customers, clients or other organizations, but opposed to being an employee of an organization.
Meaning, self-employed people generally find their own work rather than being provided with work by an employer.
But, being self-employed is challenging in a developing country like Nigeria where there is no regular supply of power, water and other utilities required for a conducive environment for starting your own personal business, which is the main reason why majority of people will prefer the security of working for an employer.
Though, the fear of poor or irregular salary or probably losing your job can make one consider being self-employed to fulfill his/her own dreams and be his/her own boss.
When one takes up the challenge of being self-employed, he/she should consider the advantages and disadvantages:
ADVANTAGES OF BEING SELF EMPLOYED.
- One of the main advantages of being self-employed is that you work at your own pace and convenience.
- The success of your business is based on you and you alone not on the managers.
- You are no longer under the threat of being fired by your boss; you become your own boss.
- It helps you to do your best and pursue your own personal dreams and goals.
- You can direct and manage the business on your own terms.
- You have the ability to be more flexible on your own schedule. DISDVANTAGES OF BEING SELF EMPLOYED

- For starters, there is possibility of dropout in face of discouragement.
- In a country like Nigeria, there is a problem of irregular power supply and other utilities for a conducive environment.
Knowing all these before venturing into being self-employed can make one go a long way to help you overcome the trials and go ahead to succeed.
